My First Football Game
Wow! What a night. I attended my first Kalani football game and watched our Falcons romp the McKinley Tigers at Roosevelt this past Saturday, Aug. 26. The score, an impressive 57-24 victory, had Kalani taking home our first win of the season. I will be sure to support our school’s athletics more often after such a great high school experience.
Going into the game, I had no knowledge of the sport and had no idea what was happening. However, sitting next to a very spirited bunch of students, I was able to grasp just enough to get me through the game.
The most exciting parts of the game was when we scored. Everyone cheering loudly in the stands, the band starting up, and feeling school spirit throughout the air. I could only imagine how the players must feel when all their hard work is paying off and feeling the positive feedback from the roaring crowd.
To further my understanding of the sport, I turned to senior Seth Tina-Soberano who is a quarterback for our school’s varsity football team. “It feels pretty cool out there on the field in uniform representing your school and your family and team,” he said. “It’s a once in a lifetime experience.”
When asked if he expected the win, he replied “I wasn’t expecting to win; I never expect to win. I expect both teams to give it their all and fight. The team who better prepares and never gives up and the team who believes in each other will come out on top,” he said. He also mentioned that he feels a lot of potential in this season and is excited to get better.
There were a lot more people at the game than I had expected, and it was nice to see many familiar faces on a Saturday night, supporting their fellow friends, students, and classmates. The boys, cheerleaders, and band did a spectacular job representing Kalani.
Don’t be like me and wait until you are a senior to catch your first school sporting event, even if you hate sports or know nothing about them. It’s a lot more entertaining than you think.
But you’ll have to find out for yourself!
