April 5, 2018
On Wednesday afternoon, Kalani administration received information “regarding a threat made against the school” that was serious enough for officials to post a letter to parents on the Kalani High School website and invite a police presence to school Thursday.
According to the letter written by Principal Mitchell Otani, students, staff, and faculty who are on campus Thursday, April 5, will see additional safety measures including added security and the presence of Honolulu Police Department officers.
The letter, on State of Hawaii Department of Education letterhead, also notes the seriousness of any and all threats made against the school.
“Terroristic threats are considered Class A student conduct offenses. Penalties can range from detention to dismissal with the possibility of arrest and serious criminal charges,” the letter says.
The principal urges the Kalani community to assist in the investigation and contact authorities with any information.

I really hope that we do not enter a period of time when it’s okay to make empty threats just to call off school just because the fear of being a next “Parkland”, “Sandy Hook” or, “Columbine”. Something has to be done.
