Taryn Travis, a dedicated educator at Kalani High School, brings a unique approach to the classroom. With a passion for fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment, Travis strives to create a space where students feel comfortable and inspired.
“I try to not be super strict and get to know who my students are personally,” Travis explains.
By building strong relationships with her students, she aims to understand their individual needs and challenges. To set clear expectations from the start, Travis reviews guidelines with her students at the beginning of each school year. This proactive approach helps to prevent disruptions and conflicts.
Travis’ journey to becoming a teacher began at a young age.
“I’ve wanted to be a teacher since I was 6 years old,” she shares. “It started with me drawing on a whiteboard.”
Her passion for problem-solving and desire to help others led her to pursue a career in education.
One of Travis’ most rewarding experiences as a teacher was witnessing a student’s positive reaction to her teaching style.
“There was this one student who said they liked how this class was more fun and different,” Travis recalls. “That was great to hear because a lot of math classes can be monotonous.”
Travis believes building strong connections with students is more important than simply imparting knowledge. By creating a supportive and engaging learning environment, Travis is making a positive impact on his students and inspiring a new generation of learners.
“I hope students learn less about actual lessons and hopefully students come to school thinking that they’re going to use everything that they learn from one class,” she says. “What is more important are the connections.”
