Chloe Sato is a science educator who creates a love of discovery in her students. Inspired by her 8th-grade teacher, Ms. Hosoda, Sato decided to pursue a career in teaching. Her love for learning, particularly biology, and her positive student experiences fueled this decision.
I loved that class, and I’ve always loved learning,” Sato explains. “Being a student, I feel like I had great teachers actually all throughout [my schooling].”
Following her passion, Sato studied biology and education in college. After getting experience through tutoring and volunteering at schools, she transitioned into a teaching role. Currently, she teaches biology and integrated science, finding immense satisfaction in watching her students grow and flourish.
Ms. Sato focuses on student well-being and checks in with them to address any concerns or offer help. She prioritizes creating a comfortable and inclusive classroom environment and encourages collaboration and confidence.
“A big focus is on the students talking to each other, which actually they’re doing a great job [of],” Ms. Sato explains. “You’re getting them to share their ideas after, you know, having a chance to think about it individually, having a chance to share it, I think helps them not only solidify the concepts or their conceptual understanding.”
While Ms. Sato maintains fair expectations and clear classroom rules (including a no-phones policy), some students perceive them as strict boundaries. However, Ms. Sato believes these structures will help them in the long run.
Her students seem to appreciate her clear expectations.
“I’ve heard I’m strict, but like in ways that make sense,” she says.
For Ms. Sato, the greatest reward of teaching lies in witnessing her students excel in science and life. Observing them develop problem-solving skills and collaborative abilities makes her happy. Ms. Sato wants her students to leave her class prepared for whatever is next in life.
“High achievement only takes place in the framework of high expectations,” Ms. Sato concludes. “I have high expectations for every one of my students, and I love getting to support them along their learning journey.”
