Kilauea is one of two of Big Island’s
active volcanoes, alongside Mauna Loa. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Kilauea has had 15 episodes of eruption since Dec. 23, 2024. The USGS states that Kilauea emits roughly 500 to 14,000 metric tons of volcanic smog, or “vog,” per day. Vog is composed of water vapor, CO2 gas, and Sulfur Dioxide (SO2).
Vog is known to cause headaches, breathing issues, and susceptibility to respiratory illnesses, according to the USGS. Another effect of vog is the Sun being turned blood-red, due to the acidic particles in the vog scattering the Sun’s blue light, thus leaving behind a gorgeous, deep red.
