Kalani Cross Country
November 2, 2015
Coached by Mrs. Woitovich with team Captain Caleb Chun, the Kalani Cross Country team is nearing the end of their season, with the Varsity Championships and the HHSAA Championships around the corner.
The Cross Country team practices 5 days a week. In fact, the team runs through thunderstorms and in heat where it gets so hot that it burns your feet from simply walking. Furthermore, Mrs. Woitovich believes that practice should not only be consistent but also enjoyable. “The philosophy of the team is to have fun, because fun is a byproduct of hard work.” Their practice ranges from sprinting 800 meters around the track to running all the way to Kapiolani Park and coming back all under an hour. Brandon Stone, a junior speaks of the practices, “Mrs. Woitovich pushes us to the limit in each practice because she wants us to have the best chance of success in the meets.”
Cross Country preseason meets take place every Saturday after a week of preparing for each meet. Schools across the state gather together to race off for a chance to achieve personal records and to have the fastest time as a team. Like golf, the team with the lowest combined score determines the winner. The Kalani Cross Country team is respected around other schools for their success with the JV boys and girls finishing as the top 3 schools out of over 20 schools last year in the Kaiser Invitational. This year, Kalani Cross Country is looking more prosperous than ever with the hopes of placing in the HHSAA state championships.
Come support the Kalani Cross Country team as they run in the Varsity Championships and OIA Championships. This year, the Cross Country team will be flying over to Maui to compete in the HHSAA Championships in Seabury Hall.
